Perspectives on developing training - watch the Finnish Army Seminar online on 13 February 2019 and partake in the discussion!

Organised in Oulu on Wednesday 13 February 2019, the Finnish Army Seminar will convene to tackle the development of training in three panel discussions conducted by leading specialists. On the seminar day, you may watch these panel discussions in English online via livestream on this site and take part in the discussion on Twitter, #finarmyseminar.

The first panel discussion will focus on the development of military training activities from the viewpoint of education and training, whereas the second one will concentrate on methods of instruction, and the third one on performance capability and competence with its emphasis on training mental readiness and resilience. Beginning by brief presentations, each panel discussion will feature leading specialists both from Finland and overseas.

Leading specialists as panelists

Focusing on the development of military training activities, the first panel discussion will be participated by Brigadier General Jukka Sonninen, Finnish Defence Forces’ ACOS Training, Colonel Lars Karlsson, Swedish Armed Forces’ Chief of Training and Evaluation Department, and Lieutenant Colonel Kurt Malme from the Directorate for Strategic Development and Readiness SHAPE.

The second panel discussion on the training methods of the 2020s will be partaken by Professor Kirsti Lonka from the University of Helsinki, Dr Keith R. Beurskens from the U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command TRADOC, and Project Manager Jan Vermeulen from the Royal Netherlands Army.

Concentrating on enhancement of mental training, the third panel discussion will be attended by Professor Jukka Liukkonen from the University of Jyväskylä, Dr Harri Gustafsberg, a researcher and instructor from Mentoritiimi® who also sports a substantial career in the Police of Finland Rapid Response Unit Karhu as well as Dr Jenni Harala, a senior researcher from the Finnish Defence Forces.

The Finnish Army Seminar will be moderated by Journalist Piia Pasanen and Finnish Army Research Director, Lieutenant Colonel Mikael Salo.
