NATO’s Standing Mine Countermeasures Group One (SNMCMG1) has arrived in Helsinki for a scheduled port visit, as part of its continued operations in the Baltic Sea.

The stop allows the multinational task group to conduct routine rest, replenishment, and maintenance before resuming its mission at sea.

The SNMCMG1, commanded by the Belgian Navy Commander Erik Kockx, plays a triple role in the region. Whilst maintaining her readiness to immediately react to emerging crises, the Group contributes to Operation Baltic Sentry, NATO’s ongoing effort to monitor and protect Critical Underwater Infrastructure (CUI), while simultaneously cleaning up historical ordnance to ensure safe navigation throughout the Baltic.

“This visit provides an important moment to regroup and recharge,” said Commander Kockx. “But it also reflects the close ties between Finland and it´s adherence to NATO, and the shared commitment of NATO partners to maritime safety and regional stability.”

The vessels in Helsinki include the Dutch staffship Snellius and minehunters from Germany (Datteln) and Belgium (Lobelia). The ships will not be open to the public during their stay in port.

SNMCMG1’s continued presence in the Baltic underlines NATO’s long-term commitment to freedom of navigation, regional cooperation, and the protection of vital underwater infrastructure in a rapidly evolving security environment.

The visit is hosted by Commander Mirva Salokannel-Lehtimäki, Commander of the 4th Mine Countermeasures Squadron of the Coastal Fleet.
