In South Lebanon a water reservoir was built to help the local farmers to supply water for their fields. The inauguration of the reservoir was held on the 8th of October 2016.

The project was carried out in cooperation with the Finnish-Irish Battalion (FINIRISHBATT), Italian government and the municipality of Marun Ar Ra’s. The project that started at the end of August was completed within two months. Now water can be pumped from the drilled well directly into the reservoir and the farmers can pick it up with tractors from there. Agriculture is the main source of livelihood in Marun Ar Ra’s.

Conform to the UNIFIL mandate the FINIRISHBATT supports and assists the local population by for example employing them. Thus a local contractor was hired to carry out the project. The CIMIC branch of the battalion visited the construction site weekly in order to see the progress of the work.

UNIFIL’s Sector West Commander Brigadier General Arturo Nitti together with the Commander of the FINIRISHBATT Lieutenant Colonel Vesa Vainio and the mayor of Marun Ar Ra’s were present in the event. The project was funded by the governments of Finland, Italy and Ireland and the municipality of Marun Ar Ra’s.
