The Chief of the Defence Command, Lieutenant General Vesa Virtanen visited Israel 22-26 September 2024. The visit was hosted by the Deputy Chief of Defence Staff of the Israel Defence Forces, Major General Amir Baram.

The program included discussions of bilateral cooperation between The Finnish Defence Forces and The Israel Defence Forces. The current security situation in the Middle East, as well as in the UNIFIL- and UNTSO- crisis management operations, were widely covered.

Especially experiences gained of the capabilities of air defence from the perspective of F-35-fighter jets and David’s Sling are highly valuable to Finland and therefore Israel’s experience in organizing air defence was discussed during the visit. Experiences of utilizing and developing a reserve-based system were widely covered as well. The use and development of the conscription service were thoroughly discussed.

Lieutenant General Virtanen emphasizes the importance of Israel as a partner in developing the Finnish capability:

-    Cooperation with the Israel Defence Forces is important to the Finnish Defence Forces. There are many similarities in the defense solutions of our countries, such as war-time forces based on a large reserve.  In the current security environment, it is essential that we develop our defense systems with a focus on efficiency. Our defence material cooperation with Israel is significant. For example, the Israeli layered approach to air defence is among the most advanced in the world. In comprehensive comparisons, many Israeli products have proven to be the most suitable for our needs. It is essential to exchange experiences with others to ensure the full utilization of all developing capabilities. I want to thank Major General Baram for the visit and the discussions. At the same time, I hope that sustainable steps could be taken towards a safer tomorrow in the whole Middle East region.

Major General Baram thanks Lieutenant General Virtanen for the visit:

-    Throughout the last few days, I had the honor of hosting the Chief of the Finnish Defense Command, LTG Vesa Virtanen. This visit, especially in the midst of these tense days, testifies to the strong connection between the Israel Defense Forces and the Finnish Defense Forces. During the visit, we toured units that are responsible for the main operational activity at this time, as well as many other units. I believe that this visit will be a significant milestone in the further development of the Finnish Defense Forces. We will continue to work together to deepen our relationship, led by a commitment to strengthen regional stability, cooperation and coordination between the militaries.
