Utti Jaeger Regiment’s winter training exercise in Lapland
The Utti Jaeger Regiment will hold a winter-conditions exercise in Lapland during 10 February – 28 March 2025.
The objective of the winter-conditions exercise is to develop personnel’s capability to operate in the cold and snowy conditions of Lapland. Additionally, the exercise will further deepen the capability to operate in winter conditions jointly with allies. The training audience will include personnel and equipment from the U.S. and from European nations.
At its different phases, the Utti Jaeger Regiment -led training exercise will be participated by up to c. 450 personnel.
Training exercise activity will take place at all hours. Soldiers will be on the move mainly on skis, snowmobiles and snow carrier ATVs, and bivouac in the terrain in small fire teams. Blank drill ammunition will be used in some of the drill events.
Training activity will be conducted across the Region of Lapland. Rehearsal of combat training will be implemented in the area of Southeastern Finland.
The exercise to include helicopter flight activity
From the Utti Jaeger Regiment, the winter-conditions exercise will be participated by NH90 transport helicopters and MD500 light helicopters. From the Netherlands, the exercise will involve AS532 Cougar helicopters.
Conducted in hours of daylight and in the dark, flight activity will involve terrain landings and occasional low-level flying. In conjunction with helicopter flight activity, forward arming and refuelling points may be used.
Helicopter flight activity and blank drill ammunition may cause noise disturbance.
The Finnish Defence Forces have issued an administrative decision concerning temporary use of areas for the Finnish Defence Forces’ military training activity. Reindeer herders have been notified of the exercise via the Reindeer Herders’ Association.
